Fit Friday #5

Morning friends! Happy Friday the 13th!! Anyone superstitious about this day?

Luckily, nothing bad has happened yet. Here’s hoping it keeps up.

Thank you all so much for the comments on yesterdays post. You all are the sweetest and so supportive!

********

It’s been a while since I’ve incorporated my favourite protein powder into breakfast.

The Fitnessista’s Protein Cookie

1/2 cup oats, 1/2 serving sun warrior, 1 tablespoon coconut flour, 2 teaspoons almond butter, cinnamon, stevia, 1 frozen banana (melted), 1/4 cup frozen blueberries, ~1/4 cup almond milk. Topped off with a dollop of greek yogurt and a tad more almond butter. Delicious.

It was my first time trying out a breakfast cookie, and it is definitely really tasty, but it didn’t keep me full for very long. For some reason oats don’t seem to do the trick for me, oat bran seems to work though. Odd.

MondayElectra’s Firework Workout + Jen’s 10-1 rep workout

I ended up switching both of these workouts up a bit.
For the Firework Workout, I changed the ab star bursts into tuck jumps, star-crossed abs into jumping lunges, and the full body fireworks into dive bomber push-ups.
In the 10-1 Workout, instead of squats I completed squat jumps and did barrier jumps instead of sit-ups.
Finished up with 5 minute plank.

This whole routine was killer.

Tuesday – spin class

As I said, I went to the gym early. I was just going to do my own solo spin workout, but nope, the gym doesn’t open until later. How lame.

Wednesday -

I believe this workout took me about 25 minutes. I forget now, but around that time.

Thursday – spin class

These style of workouts are always a favourite of mine, I think every week I do at least one of Zuzana’s workouts. They are high intensity, and just what I love to be doing in a workout routine.

Saturday – Pilates

I ended up doing a pilates class last weekend, and absolutely loved it. I actually started out taking pilates classes about 3 times a week when I was first losing weight and really enjoyed them. Once it started to get too expensive, I stopped doing the classes.

Now, I am going to be doing pilates classes as often as I can. For sure once a week, but will most likely be doing videos from home because of the cost. Yes, I’m cheap. I’d rather save up for attending a crossfit class at some point.

I love blogilates site, she posts awesome workout videos. And is my go to gal for pilates routines.

Sunday – rest day

*******

Looking at this week of workouts, I believe I may need to do some adjusting. I mentioned yesterday about the problems I have been facing with getting stuck in my comfort zone, I think I need to re-evaluate my current exercise routine.

I do a lot of high intensity workouts and even though they aren’t long maybe I should be putting my focus on something other then working out. I know it is very beneficial to workout obviously, but I do not want one obsession with clean eating to turn into another with over exercising.

This will be tough for me, and I don’t believe I will cut out all exercising. Implementing more pilates, yoga, TRX training, and strength training may be more beneficial for me at this moment.

It’s not the end of the world if I give these type of workouts for a month, two, or however long I need. I will try and go into more detail about these thoughts in a post next week!:)

What was your workout today? Or your favourite workout of the week? Links welcome!

  1. I know I say this with like aaall your posts- but whatev- I ESPECIALLY look forward to the workout ones!
Seriously, you give me ideas and inspiration for my own workouts, and have helped bust me out of my own workout boredom I was unfortunately experiencing. The workouts you make up yourself are fantastic to me- quick and challenging- I’m going to do this one tonight!
Yesterday I did your girlfran over @DashofMegs bodyweight workout she just posted a vlog for. I really loved it too:)!

Stepping back from doing so many high intensity workouts right now seems like a healthy idea for you. Just maybe till your body is in better balance, and you could re-evaluate from there? The stress of too many of these workouts could maybe be harming your body , when its still in a vulnerable state as a result of previous ED restrictions. And we NEED to treat our bodies right!
Besides, a good workout schedule incorporates all different intensities + rest anyway I think:), good luck.
    Xxx

    • Haha yay! I’m glad you like my posts, that makes me so happy! And I always look forward to your comments, you are too kind!
I should try out that workout! I have so many workouts saved that I want to try out, its insane.
Exactly, I’m thinking maybe I’m suffering from adrenal fatigue from the way I’ve been feeling for a while, but I guess I need to check with my doctor. I might as well just take a week to reevaluate. Won’t hurt, right?

  2. AWW YAY!!! I love that you did the firework workout! I had so much fun with that theme! :-D Your variations ROCK too!! I am also a high intensity gal – love me some tabata, hiit, circuits, if I’m dripping sweat, I’m lovin’ it! So with you though on the importance of variation. I’m so proud of you for recognizing things that could potentially be something to look at varying and work on that before you actually need to – you’re amazing. LOVE your Fit Friday roundups , always psyched to see what killer HIIT WO’s you’re doing! XO

    • I’m so glad you’ve been posting them, I for sure love the mix up of them. They are awesome! Wish we could work out together, we would have so much fun sweating our faces off:)
Thanks Electra your amazing motivation for me!xo

  3. it looks like you really are trying to find that balance and seeing what your body wants. so inspirational!

    • Thanks Alex! I’m definitely going to be trying my hardest, so I can get back on track to living my life to full potential!

  4. I agree, that taking it easy is probably the best thing for you. I cut out exercise completely when I started recovery because it was a personal decision and I was in dire need of gaining weight. I gradually reintroduced it into my life. You seem pretty thin too though and if I recall, have some period issues? So… that’s probably an indicator that the daily high intensity workouts are just burning you out and you’re running on exhaust fumes rather than on fuel! Yoga helps a lot of people — it kind of annoyed me and I never went back after trying it lol, but you should definitely try it! And walks… walks are great! They clear your head and are much easier on your body while still giving you a workout by raising your heart rate.

I know for me, it helped to channel my thoughts to something ELSE that really motivated me so I wasn’t left twiddling my thumbs, obsessing about “healthy living” ALL the dang time. I focused on school, caught up on reading, and rekindled some friendships :D

    • Hey Jess! Yes, I still definitely am at the lower end of a healthy weight, if it even is healthy. I avoid the scale since it triggers me, so I’m hoping I’m in the appropriate weight range. Its definitely the thoughts mostly that I struggle with, and definitely the menstrual issue. I do not have a period and it is awful, especially as I have had bone density tests done and the results weren’t what we hoped.
You are totally right that I am probably just burning out my fuel, so to speak. I definitely need to get into walking more, especially with this beautiful weather while we have it!
You are totally right that it is a great idea to channel my thoughts and energy into other things rather then just be stuck in the food and fitness mindset! I have been making more efforts to reconnect with friends and read for pleasure and it has definitely helped thus far!!

  5. Cutting back on the HIIT workouts may really help you! I know I got stuck in a rut when I was doing a lot of HIIT and found it really helpful to shift to more of a focus on strength training. Experiment with it and see what works for you but you may find success with it! Plus it is super motivating to see results with how much stronger you are getting versus results in the mirror which we tend to focus on! For me it shifted my focus from what I looked like to what I could do!

    • I definitely think I will need to experiment a little, especially while I am having the no period problem right now. I’m betting my body is just not happiest and I need to adjust things. I can’t change if I don’t change things that I’m doing! That is such a great way of looking at getting stronger not from the mirror but what I can do!

  6. Dang girl! Your workouts are insane!! I have been doing a lot of walking and pilates. blogilates.com is the bomb!

  7. I love reading about your workouts, girl! The 25 minute routine that you did on Wednesday sounds awesome. I may have to try that tomorrow (because I know I’m going to be crunched for time!) And YAY for spin, of course!
I definitely think it’s important that you don’t let yourself obsess over exercise and getting an “intense” workout in every day. Focusing on other things is the key, in my opinion. Find something else (a hobby, of sorts) that makes you happy and spend some days doing that. Then just incorporate walking or yoga/pilates on those days. That’s what I’ve been working on. Some days are easier than others but I know that my body and mind appreciate it!

    • Its a great one if your short on time!
I know my mind and body would appreciate a bit more of a break, just knowing the struggles I’m going through and working on, I’m sure it would be happier walking, doing pilates, and yoga. Now if I could fall in love with those workouts like I have with intense ones hah. I really don’t want my total focus on food/fitness so its important I readjust.

  8. Mmm, that protein cookie looks delightful! I may try it for breakfast this weekend. :-)

I love the variety in your workouts! HIIT is my favorite too, and I used to do it ALL the time, until I learned that it’s most effective if done only 2-3 times/week. I was definitely over-doing it! (It’s addictive though, isn’t it?!) Now my workout week looks entirely different; I strength train hard and heavy 5 x’s week, and do short cardio sessions (20 mins) 2-3 x’s week. One of those cardio days is steady, and the other two are involve HIIT. It’s a nice balance that works for me, and I’ve grown to absolutely LOVE lifting! I never ever ever thought I’d say that.

Have you tried a structured strength-training program, love? It takes a while to get used to, but I bet you’d love it! It’s amazing how much better my body has responded to weight lifting than cardio. I’m more toned and fit that I’ve ever been in my life (and I’m spending far less time in the gym).

Girl, I’m SO proud of you for recognizing that your body might be a bit tired, and for being so honest about it! I guarantee that resting a bit more will make a HUGE difference in not just your energy levels, but the effectiveness of your workouts as well.

Love you to the moon and back! Happy weekend! xoxo <3

    • It is so true that doing it 2-3 times a week is probably best. I need to get over that fear of doing something else. It is totally addicting, but I need to do something new and less intense in sake of gaining a few more pounds and getting my body back to its healthy place! I need to get more into lifting, so many people love it and I’ve never really given it much of a chance, I guess because I find it intimidating. I love the sounds of your workout program! It sounds like it has done wonders for you – body and mind wise! You seem much happier from getting your plan from Tara and working with her! Love you my beautiful friend!!xo

  9. What a great week of workouts!

I just finished a 12 mile run, and it was glorious! Even though my passion truly is running… i’m thinking it would be nice to go back to incorporating more circuit workouts as well. :)

    Have a greattt weekend girl!!

    • Haha, totally. It can even make you a better runner, so I’ve heard;)
I’m not a runner though, I totally wish it was my thing, but sadly its just not.

  10. My workout today will be a Bioluminesant Kayaking tour this evening. I talked a group of friends into coming with me. We will start kayaking at dusk and see glowing sea life. It’s going to be a great workout with good friends!

    • Wow, I’ve never heard of that! Sounds super interesting though! Especially because I have an obsession with kayaking, I love it!!
Working out with your friends is always the best!

  11. i have been dying to try gina’s breakfast cookie thing. i’ll have to make it this week and see if it keeps me full. like the idea of it.

you are awesome for making the squats squat jumps! those always kill me!

    • It is definitely pretty tasty! It didn’t keep me too full though. Not sure why!
Haha, yah the jump squats made it killer! But still super fun! Thanks for the workout:)

  12. Nourish your body and don’t feel bad for doing it! High intensity workouts are great, but you don’t need to do them everyday. Listen to your body not your mind. If you had a daughter what would you tell her? Follow your advice! Good on you for being honest with yourself and your readers. You will get past it. X

    • Very true. They are not meant for everyday, and I need to just deal with that and listen to my body.
      Thanks Jess!

  13. I love your mindset towards your body & exercise…exercise should make us feel good about ourselves and bring out the best in us! Had you asked me a few months ago about my favorite workout, I would have immediately had said running or some other kind of cardio! Lately I have been all about the weight training- love that I can see changes in my body both in terms of appearance & strength and it also doesn’t drain me of energy!

    • Exercise should definitely be that release from pressures we are feeling in other aspects of life and not a tool to “look better”, I think that is where people get so lost in creating and living out an exercise routine. It is meant for enjoyment. I definitely want to get more into weight training! Especially with some of the changes I’m looking to make, I want to become stronger! I’m always a little intimidated to start out something new though! I guess everyone starts out that way though!

  14. So glad I found this blog! I’m lovin’ it. :) Nice job with this week’s workouts! I agree with the whole obsession thing. I feel like sometimes I am obsessed with working out, and quite often when I feel this way, I know I need to take a step back and just take an impromptu rest day. It’s really for the best. Good for you for liking HIIT, though! I feel like I have to force myself to do HIIT, other than sprinting of course. And I LOVE that you’re an oat bran over oatmeal girl. I am the exact same way! :)

    • Thanks Brittany!!
Its so true, I think if we feel that we are getting obsessed with something that there is truth behind that. Its very important in this stage to take a step back and readjust our priorities in health. I just want to be healthy and live life to the fullest, so its great that I realized this.
I can’t get enough of oat bran/oatmeal. It is a true obsession at this point.;)

  15. I’ve never had a protein cookie…it seems like I’d be cheating by eating anything called a cookie, haha!

    • Haha. Yes, definitely NOT a cookie! In any way, but I get the idea of it taking on a cookie shape. And this way it can be eaten for breakfast;)

  16. Wow, sounds like a great week of workouts with tonnes of variety! My favourite work out last week was a dance class I took on monday. I was sore for a few days after it! :)

    • I totally wish I could dance, unfortunately I look quite tooly while attempting it;) hah. Sounds like fun though!

  17. Firstly, that breakfast cookie looks OUTstanding.
Second, you’re from Victoria! I was just there in May and am totally obsessed and dying to go back/move there. Now I know who to call when these things happen, hah!
LASTLY, my workout today was a run right before a giant storm hit!

    • Yep, lived my whole life in Victoria!
Really! That’s awesome, you should definitely move on over here! Its a pretty cool city!
Yeah, and if you ever visit you’ll have someone to escort you around town;)
Lucky you got that run in before the storm hit!
