August Favourites

Holy moly, September has arrived. I say this every month, but I just can’t believe how fast 2012 is flying by.

Guess who’s birthday is less than a month away? Mine…I’m so excited for this year! I’m hoping to make some major strides in my goals and accomplish a lot.

We’re coming up on the last few days of summer. And now the excitement is coming that Autumn will be here soon! I’m pretty excited for fall to happen, but for now am enjoying the rest of this beautiful weather.

Here are some of my favourites of August.

Eggs

I used to really dislike eggs in anything, but have now embraced them in my diet. Not only are they nutritious, but they are delicious as well. And good with basically everything your pair them with.

Coconut anything…

 [Source 1],[Source 2]

Did you see this coming? I think this should be on my favourites every month. Butter, milk, flour, cream

Coconut is scrumptious in every way and every form.

If you don’t own any coconut products, go out and buy some this minute. Yes, right now.

Broccoli Slaw

I think Kristin got me hooked from all of her yummy looking broccoli slaw pictures. I pretty much eat this stuff everyday.

And it is the best when roasted in coconut oil and nutritional yeast. Just sayin’

Solo Muffins or Bars

As a single lady, I like to rely on muffins or protein bars made for one.

Since I don’t want to make a huge batch of baked goods, because I usually get sick of them after like 3 days. It’s fun to always make adjustments to simple recipes and create new flavours to enjoy.

Americanos

Yah, this one is implied.

I’m hoping for my birthday I get an espresso maker, so I don’t spend my whole pay-check at Starbucks. Not that I mind it though. It may be easier for those times I’m rushed in the morning.

White Dresses

[Source]

I think white is becoming the new little black dress.

It’s such a simple, clean look that you have the freedom to dress up for more elegant events. Or can dress them down for daily wear.

Princess Nails

[Source]

I love the look of the all pale pink nails with one sparkly, totally girly and so my thing.

Gone Girl

[Source]

If you haven’t  read this book, I highly recommend it.

Its the last book I’ve really been able to get into since reading 11/22/63.

Grimm

[Source]

I’m a sucker for cop shows, and this one includes suspense, mystery, and is fairytale-esque.

Its kind of weird if you’ve never seen it, but I like myself some weird things.

It’s really embarassing to try and explain this show to people, because I make no sense when trying and I  make it sound awful. I swear its good though.

Daily Meditation

[Source]

I’ve realized how important it is to set my alarm just 5 minutes earlier and allow myself to sit without thoughts for 5 minutes and repeat any mantra I want to set up an intention for the day.

It’s really only 5 minutes, not a huge time slot. Everyone can do it and it can make all the difference in my positivity. It allows me to get connected with my mind and allow myself to disengage from negative thoughts if need be.

  1. I LOVED Gone Girl. Seriously could not put it down for 2 days. Even my sister who has a lot of trouble really getting into books fell in love with that one. I read Sharp Objects by Flynn too–not as crazy good as GG but definitely twisted!

    • It was a great book!! I couldn’t put it down either!
Oh thanks for the recommendation, I’ll check that book out next!

  2. I’m loving eggs too! I never used to eat them this much and then all of a sudden this summer I’ve been going through them like crazy! Some of my other favourites this month were heirloom tomatoes, HLS, the tv show LOST, and hiking!

  10. I’ve been meaning to start watching Grimm, because I’ve heard so many great things about it! Right now I love SYTYCD:) I’m a sucker for dancing shows, because it’s something I could never, ever do so I just gawk at all the incredible dancers!!

    • Definitely start watching it, its such a great show!
Ha ha, I love the dance shows too because I’m just an awful dancer.

  11. Great post and list of many marvelous things!! I’m really lovin’ all the coconut love! That broccoli slaw sounds fab btw, thanks for the idea! I used to looooove my Americano’s too, loaded with whole cream and about 1/4 cup of sugar jk/lol. Can’t do coffee anymore tho..my body won’t allow it boo! :( Great to see you’re embracing Daily Meditation, Mantras, and Intentions..good for you! makes such a difference in our lives, right?!

    • Looks like we have the same tastes:)
Oh no to no coffee, I guess some bodies just don’t like the caffeine!
It makes a HUGE difference when I begin my day with a positive intention and meditation, its really opened my eyes to a difference of appreciation of life!

  12. I basically love all of your favorites. Minus the eggs. ;-) When I saw the title of this post, I was like okay coffee, eggs, coconut flour are all going to be on there. Haha! I know my girl. See ya Thursday?! ;-)

  13. I LOVE white, but I have a hard time keeping it clean haha. I also love eggs, they are so cheap, nutritious and versatile! Hope you have a great Labor day!:)

  14. That Princess nail thing – I need to do it. Like right now. That’s so cute!

TV wise, I’m watching Prison Break right now. I never watched it when it was on, and I should have! Such a good show.

  15. Ooh, I hadn’t seen the princess nail thing before! It must happen. So pretty!

And I love white dresses! I have one that I picked up this spring that I just adore — they do work a lot like black dresses in their ability to be dressed up and down, but I think they feel more pretty and girly in a certain way.

  16. I’m such a huge fan of the one sparkly ring finger nail! I have it on me now but I LOVE how glittery your polish is – what kind is it?? I must find some!! I’m with ya in the coconut boat… I love all things coconut!! I need to get more butter though, right now all I have is oil and butter is way better!

    • Me too, its a favourite. Their not my nails ha ha. Found that picture online, mine don’t look as pretty;)
Yes, the coconut butter is so much better! It tastes like heaven.

  17. Love the coconut and muffins!! I have been on a coconut kick too… now for fall– coconut on squash!

  18. Yay for broccoli slaw! And I LOVE those nails! :D

  19. Ack I completely LOVE the princess/accent nail thing. And that combination of light pink and silver sparkles is gorgeous… might have to steal that the next time I do my nails :D Totally agree that coconut is like the epitome of summer… I even love it in scents like shampoo and body lotions because it makes everything feel like a tropical paradise :)

    • Its the cutest way to have nails, I’m convinced!
Oh man, same here. I love the body lotions I have about 3 of the same from the body shop. Got to make sure I never run out!

  20. Wait.a.minute! You like coconut?!? …kidding:). I luuurved this post. Seriously Lisa, your blog is an absolute joy for me to read, always a bright spot in my day<3. And Woop for Autumn babies! I'm one too:), ( notice we were born in the season of The Best veggie- squash/pumpkin. Coincidence? I think not).

Yup , all your faves are basically mine too.( Except ,white dresses are just not practical for someone like myself, at all. I commend anyone who can wear white & not get something down themselves.) Ditto on the eggs, I never used to eat them, now I'm all over them. My cousin owns a farm, & I got to select a few eggs from their chickies last week. It was fun!

Ill pick strawbs & bloobs as my August favourite. I really tried to make the most of them before their season ended, by eating as many as humanly possible erryday. I'm now looking forward to the new seasons fruit & veg- APPLES & SQUASH, yay!
    Xxx

    • Ha ha! Yay, so happy you love the blog!!
Of course we’d be born in the BEST veggies and squash season!
Um yah, I have the hardest time keeping my white clothes actually white. It gets dirty within the hour if I last that long;)
Oh wow, I would be so excited if I knew someone who owned a farm. That is so neato!
I can’t wait for the crazy amount of apples and squash!

  21. I’m glad you put this together Lisa, it’s great to look back on the “best of the month” and realize all of the wonderful things you did! I am absolutely in love with that nail polish! It’s so you, and now I need it too haha
I’m still waiting on Gone Girl, doh!

    • You’ve definitely got to read it when you have time, its a great read!
I also like doing the monthly recaps, because it makes me look like I actually did some okay things ha ha.

  22. i wish my sister would freaking finish gone girl so i could start it already!

  23. OMG I need that pink mani with the glitter nail in my life ASAP!!!
I love your fave roundups from the month!

  24. August has definitely been an amazing month for you and I know that September will be even better! Your obsession with coconut has inspired me and I have TONS of recipes bookmarked that I’m planning to try in the next few weeks. I can’t wait.
And it’s too funny that you mentioned princess nails…I literally JUST finished painting mine a pastel pink with a sparkly accent finger. I love it! It makes me feel like a little girl but still looks really classy. (:

    • Ha ha. You need to get on the coconut train! It is lovely.
I love the classy look of princess nails, just adorable!

  25. Oh my goodness! I totally hope you get your own espresso maker!!!!!!! HAHA! That would be the best bday present for sure hun! Fingers are crossed for you! Haha

  26. I am obsessed with Grimm! Seriously it’s the best show ever. :) I’m at school though so I can’t watch it, unfortunately. You have great taste, everything else you have on the list looks like something I’d like!

  27. My august favorites:

Stone fruit – peaches, plums, nectarines
Green leafy vegetables – kale and collard greens
Going dairy free after giving myself a little challenge and finding that it does not agree with my digestion. I feel a lot better.
All of the new talking my little one is doing!!! It is so fun to learn what she’s thinking about.

    • That’s so great you feel a lot better without the dairy addition in your diet!
Awe, that’s adorable your little one is talking now! When I nannied I was always so excited when I’d hear the younger boy start speaking more!

      • Yeah, it is exciting to hear her talking! She likes to talk about food a lot. She asks her dad and me to read her the bible. She asks to play with her different toys. She says “fun” and “wow” a lot when she’s having a good time. She also says “tickle” and then proceeds to tickle us. And she yells, “Hi Vera!” whenever our cat comes in the room. Haha. So it’s a lot of fun!

        Thanks for your reply. :)

  28. I just started to embrace eggs in my diet, too! It is nice to have an original french toast from time to time – and I love them best when they are cooked, but still slightly soft inside.

The meditation thing is a great habit, which I would love to introduce for myself.

  29. I totally agree with you about coconut, although I’ve never tried coconut flour! Also with you on the eggs front- so easy and perfect serving size!!! And those nails are really cute! :)

    • You have to try coconut flour, its amazing! If you use it in great recipes, it comes out amazing!
      I love the nail look!:)
