I met a sad sight this morning when I looked into my cashew butter jar and realized there was only a smidgen left of the good stuff. Sad times indeed.
Enough about the lame stuff though, it is WIAW after all.
It started well enough with one of my favourite breakfasts.
* Overnight buckwheat bowl with chia seeds, hemp seeds, pumpkin, a little banana, cinnamon, and stevia. And peanut flour paste with strawberries on top. *
Yah, still not sick of this one. Although, I did switch up the oat bran in favour of buckwheat.
I woke up with the best intentions to go to spin class, but I’m still exhausted. So with that I’m going on day two of rest. It doesn’t sound like a big deal, but I’m getting a little anxious already. Silly restless leg syndrome.
I was getting quite good with being okay with my rest days, but now that I’ve increased my calories a bit, it has been a struggle to get used to them.
Well, its good to get out of that comfort zone. Being uncomfortable gives us positive changes and makes us a stronger person.
It ended up being a beautiful morning, and I was able to gather my thoughts while watching the sun rise. What a perfect start to the day.
I should count how many pictures I have with me and Starbucks, I’m guessing too many.
Today I had to be out of the house by 9, so I packed up some things and my Dad and I went to Starbucks, because I obviously needed some caffeine.
And I also brought a squash with me…what, you don’t bring Kabocha with you when you visit your parents?
I ended up using all my other veggies at home, so I brought a squash along to eat for a snack, since I’m super cool.
Roasted, with a shot of coconut butter on the side. Delicious.
Yep. I have a squash addiction. The lady working the till at the grocery store asked if I had a restaurant that I was buying it for…yikes.
I guess it looked that way since I bought 6 squash, 4 egg white jugs, 6 cans of pumpkin, and 2 big cartons of almond milk. I like to stock up so I don’t have to run to the store every other day. Still, awkward times at the grocery store.
Since our house is undergoing a spray session, I had to be out until 4.
Luckily, I got to hang out with my dad, and we both did some work on our computers.
I seriously don’t know where the day got to, it went by so fast.
We quickly visited the mall and got some David’s Tea to drink while chatting. They had a bunch of new Fall flavours out, which made me a happy lady! I couldn’t decide which one I wanted, since they all sounded splendid.
My Dad and I both settled on a cup of Persian Apple, which was delicious. And I had a photo shoot with the cup and a candle, because I’m a nerd and thought it would make a neat picture, which it didn’t.
When I got home, I wasn’t really hungry, but knew I should grab something. So I got to work on a quick dinner.
A simple bowl of savoury oat bran with nutritional yeast, hemp seeds, red pepper flakes and an egg.
I just cooked up the oat bran with a little coconut oil and water, added in the nutritional yeast, and topped with a sprinkle of hemp seeds, and eggs.
The perfect, easy dinner. With a spinach salad with red peppers on the side. Needed to get in my greens in too.
As always, I’ll finish up the day with a night snack before heading to bed.
Not too sure what that will entail. Possibly a pumpkin cookie, maybe some cookie dough?
Do you enjoy rest days?
Best thing you ate today?
Have a fantastic Wednesday!

That’s funny the grocery lady thought you were buying all the squash for a restaurant haha! I would be stockin up like a mad woman too, KABOCHA IS JUST SO GOOD!!!!
Ha ha, I know I was so embarrassed! It is honestly the greatest food out there!
You totally need to open up a restaurant and sell kaboocha squash and coconut butter! I would be first in line
Yum!
I would love to do that. It would be all things coconut and squash;)
Hi Lisa, that was hilarious about the grocery lady:)) I have to say that I also love squash and I’m going to start eating very often since it is fall already.
I am pretty pumped about the whole season of Fall. I love all the foods that come into season!
Hahaha that’s so funny about the cashier at the grocery store! Also I really need to go to David’s Tea and check out their fall collection. I know I’ll love it!
You definitely do! It all smells wonderful, and tastes delicious!!
I will so be buying squash this weekend at the grocery store! Looks so good!! And totally not weird it travels with you : )
If they are planned, then I very much enjoy rest days!! If unplanned(aka I woke up late, felt too lazy to hit the gym) I get antsy! Regardless, I usually take two a week as I know they are necessary. Gotta protect the temple ; )
Its so true! I need to learn to crave my rest days, I know its best for the body when we give it some much needed rest and relaxation!
“Well, its good to get out of that comfort zone. Being uncomfortable gives us positive changes and makes us a stronger person.” – SO TRUE, babe. I’m so freakin’proud of you!!! I know it’s really hard to carve out time for rest when you’re increasing your nutrients but you know it’s well worth it and you need it to improve and reverse your health conditions! YOU CAN DO THIS!!! Let’s plan for our chatski tomorrow?
I have grown to love my rest days. It varies (one or two days) depending on how I’m feeling but I really love them. I wake up in the morning and stretch for 20 minutes and it feels soooo darn good. I always feel so energized and recharged the day after, too, which always makes me feel so good for listening to my body.
Thanks Heather!! We need to reschedule our little chat!!
I’m so proud with how much you’ve grown in respect to embracing rest and I know one day I will be there as well! Your body must feel a ton better. I mean, I know I need the rest, our bodies went through hell with the ED. And I’m sure our thyroids, bones, and adrenal glands need some much needed catch up time
I’m so glad you are resting! Keep up that eating… It will be worth it! I have been taking lots of rest days, and I’m loving them! Napping instead of working out has become normal for me lately. Try it… it is awesome!
I know it will be all worth it in the end! I’m now working on ways to channel the extra energy I had into some meditation and thinking time instead of stressing over missed exercise. I think I should add some naps…since my sleeping patterns are so awful!
kabocha so hot right now. love it
I still can’t find kobacha squash anywhere. Not at whole foods, trader joes, or any of the grocery stores where I live. Someday (when I’m rich and famous) I will buy a field and order little oompa-loompas to grow me some!!
Oh man, you’ve got to track it down. I don’t even have a TJ’s or whole foods. I usually find it at the asian markets that we have downtown here, since most other grocery stores don’t carry them (Kabochas are technically Japanese pumpkins). Ha ha, that would be super awesome to grow your own Kabochas!
hahahaha that is hysterical!
that is such a beautiful squash! thats so funny she asked that..i think you can never have enough squash!
That’s what I’m thinking:)
I LOVE kabocha squash! I usually roast it with some miso paste…mmmmmm.
Thanks for sharing. Happy WIAW
I haven’t tried it with miso paste! Next time!
Hi Lisa,
So when taking a rest day, even though I too get antsy and itch to race off for a run, I try to remind myself that it’s for the best. And that I will be that much fresher tomorrow and ready to have a super fantastic workout, rather than two ones where I feel less than best. It is tough though.
Oh well.
I enjoy rest days, because it feels good to give my body a break. If I were to try to work out instead of taking a rest day where it is needed, I would end up trying to push myself to go harder, and be unable to get as intense of a workout as I usually do. Then I would feel like a failure.
OMG, I totally agree with you on the grocery store thing. I hate to go so often, and I eat so much of the same things over and over, so when I do go I always buy tons of the same couple of items. Haha. Cashiers always have some remark like, “You must really like X”. And I have totally been asked from the farmers at the market if I buy for a restaurant, too, haha! When you buy 20 something bags of kale, as well as large quantities of other vegetables week after week, I guess it does look a little suspicious.
OMG, I still have to get my hands on a kabocha squash!! I have no idea what it tastes like. My most recent vegetable obsession is for eggplant! I used to think I didn’t like it, but I think it all comes down to how it is prepared. It is such a lovely, new taste for me compared to all the vegetables I usually eat.
Take care, girly <3
That’s a very good way to look at rest days! I know that my body needs them, I just need to start listening to my body signals instead of what my mind is telling me.
Ha ha, I always feel weird buying so much produce, but oh well, I love that stuff!
You need to find Kabocha! Its seriously a life changing food. I can’t stop buying the stuff!! Eggplant is also delicious, but no comparison to kabocha!;)
I dont really like my rest days all that much – i love the endorphin rush I get from going to the gym – the only time I really like my rest days is if im realllllyyy sore from an intense work out! Wow 6 squashes thats insane! Wish we got different varieties easily in the UK; the only one widely available is butternut.
Oh weird! I would think there would be some others! Yah, rest days can be harder for some of us then for others. I just know I probably need some extra rest every now and again!
What grocery store are you finding those kabochas?! I swear, my stores only have butternut, acorn, or spaghetti.
Since kabocha’s are Japanese pumpkins, I always am able to find them in Asian Markets we have downtown. Its funny because the stores are so tiny, but have tons of awesome veggies!
I can never find them at normal grocery stores!
I hate when grocery people judge me by what I buy, one of my pet peeves. One guy always says, wow you eat healthy. Why yes, yes i do.
I know, I get a lot of those comments too!
Hahahaha oh that is so funny that the lady asked you that. lmao that must have been awkward. “Nope, I just really love squash…. and pumpkin…” haha that’s hilarious.
Anyway, I wish I liked cashew butter so I could feel your pain in the jar being all done. But I don’t.. soooo
Hah, just kidding, I do feel ya on this one although not a fan of cashew butter but I do like others so I know how you feel. But you could make some overnight oats IN THE JAR?
Have a wonderful Wednesday, my dear! xo
It was pretty darn awkward!
I can’t believe you dislike cashew butter, its probably my favourite!! I’ve actually never had oats in the jar before, its like a blogging sin;) I don’t think my hand would fit in the jars? ha ha.
Maybe I’ll try it out though!
That squash looks delicious. I love cinnamon roasted squash, I need to go grab myself one!
And rest days are always great for the body, even though they can mess with out minds
…If only we could turn of our brain lol
Its one of my favourite foods!
I definitely need to get away from my mind when I’m resting, otherwise it completely messes with me. I wish I could turn off my brain some of the time ha ha.
YES! I bought a butternut to my mums once. Woulda been kabocha, but I can only find it once in a blue moon *tears*.
So, I made yesterdays cookie. Twice already<3. Once with chocolate drops mixed in the batter, & once topped with a hazelnut butter, sea salt, vanilla, cocoa powder mix( aka, healthy nutella). It really is a delicious, chewy, doughy, soft, flavourful, sweet, moreish…err, sorry, I'm getting off track. Basically- LOVED the cookie! And I see many more in my future.
Continue doing your best with the resting, & upping your cals Lisa:). Gosh, I know it's hard. Just have to keep focussed on the ultimate goal of health & wellness.
It's too weird. I'd planned to have eggs on oats for 1st time ever tonight- your picture got me looking forward to it! I spotted oats cooked with some coconut milk, topped with eggs & honey, on Cotter Crunch the other week . Went straight to my to-make list!
Xxx
Ohh that’s sad! Yayyy! So happy you like it! I like the sounds of yours! Yum
I need to get some more cocoa powder!
I love Lindsay’s eggs + oats creations, she made me try them for the first time as well!
kabocha!!!! Gosh, i’m so obsessed too. It’s nature’s candy!
It truly is.
I love rest days–usually
Ha ha. They just mess with my mind!
Kabocha kabocha kabocha
I’m getting better at rest days. I can tell when I need them and how it really helps me feel better the next day. I take way more now that I used to that’s for sure.
SO awesome!
I’m glad your getting better with rest days. Its always true that I feel much better the next day, just the day I implement rest is not the prettiest ha ha.
I still haven’t tried kabocha but I really need to!!
You have to get on it!
Rest days are some of my most looked-forward to days of the week.
That’s great to hear! I hope to get to that place!
I think you know my answer here – no I don’t really enjoy rest days. They are mentally uncomfortable! And sometimes if it’s a sedentary day for me (like a long car ride or at work) it’s also physically uncomfortable to not get my energy out and get my legs moving.
However like you said, we have to be uncomfortable to better ourselves. Just like we may hear encouragement to get physically uncomfortable during a workout to see change, mental discomfort is also needed to bring about change – in my case, less dependence on exercise.
Yesterday I stuck with just morning yoga instead of cardio or lifting and I’m glad I did because I’m STILL sore from the workout I did Monday. Tomorrow morning I plan to do just a 50-minute new ballet-style workout video I have, no cardio, no weights. We’ll see how it goes!
LOL at the person asking you if you’re buying squash for a restaurant. I pack my own snacks to go to cafes all the time though! I figure I’m paying them for coffee all the time so it’s OK. And at the cafes where they know me, I feel more comfortable doing it.
So mentally uncomfortable. I guess that’s what it takes to get them to be more comfortable though, is to include them more often into our routine. We can’t expect these things to come easily unfortunately. It takes lots of practice!
Yay, I’m glad you’ve been doing some yoga instead of cardio. I hope the no cardio/weights thing went well for you!
I really need to make savory oats one day. I’m sure the cooler weather will make it happen sooner rather than later!
My vote is pumpkin cookie dough. Extra cinnamon.
You should try them! I thought they would taste weird, but they are actually pretty darn tasty!
Extra cinnamon is a must in anything containing pumpkin:) They are the perfect little combo!
Haha that is pretty awesome that the grocery lady asked you that! Shows you are a true fanatic just as I am
I hear you on reducing exercise, increasing calories and feeling anxious as a result… I am right there with you and it does indeed stink. But we are making the changes and they are uncomfortable, and we can both work toward accepting such things are going to drive us bonkers for a while. You have this Lisa!
Ha ha, we love our Kabocha:)
Yep, this week especially has been super duper challenging. I strained my neck, so working out is just out of the question. And now I have to increase my calories by a long shot. Yikes.
I know it will get easier as time goes by though! We are in this together, so it makes me feel less alone! You have this too Tessa!
I LOVE rest days … I get to sleep in
Great to hear you embrace your rest days!
Hey, so I love your site and reading your blog, but I just had a question – how come you use peanut flour paste instead of just regular peanut butter (or any nut butter for that matter)? I used to have an ED as well, and one of the best ways to begin the long process to overcome it is by eating real foods (peanut flour is just one example of a “Substitute” that you have for real nut butters – remember these are good fats!)
Lisa- I love your blog! I can totally relate to the kabocha comment. I buy at least 6 a week at my local Asian grocer-its the standing joke when I come in each week – she’s knows I’m a Thursday regular shopper-lol! BTW, the skins from the kabocha make great kabocha chips- give it a try some time with a little sea salt and coconut spray!
