Dark Chocolate Cherry Smoothie

  • 1 cup milk of choice (I used unsweetened almond milk)
  • 1 cup frozen cherries
  • 1 tablespoon cacao powder (I use dark chocolate)
  • 1 scoop protein powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon each of guar and xanthan gum (for added thickness)
  • 1 cup ice cubes (about 10)
  • 1 tablespoon coconut butter* (optional, but adds such a nice flavor to the smoothie)

Place all ingredients into a food processor or blender and mix until smooth and creamy. Serve immediately.

  1. It’s really starting to freak me out how much we are twins because I have been loving frozen cherries and quinoa lately…. hahaha oh man! Happy Friday, love!

  2. I’ve never seen Food Matters, but now I want to! The only food related documentary I’ve seen was Food Inc and it really opened up my eyes to the issues in the food industry.

I love Coke Zero but I try not to drink it too often (maybe like once a month). I’ve bought Zevia a few times in the last month and it’s pretty good – not as good as Coke Zero, but I figure it’s slightly better for me. :P

  3. Happy Friday! I just found this breakfast quinoa recipe via Pinterest the other day… looks delicious! http://www.outtolunchcreations.com/recipes/breakfast-quinoa/. I’m in desperate need of some new cute clothes for work – I’ll have to check out Bebe’s online store! Thanks for the recommendation!

  4. ooooh i’m trying zevia soon – i can’t wait! and i love the cherry chocolate combo!!

  5. so i have never had a lara bar but that new flavor gosh sounds so amazing. need to find one

  6. That smoothie looks amazing! Love everything about this post! I’m going to have to watch food matters. Sounds like it would be really interesting.

  7. I love Zevia! My favourite flavour is creaming soda, yum! That smoothie reminds me of my favourite australian chocolate bar! It’s called a cherry ripe, and it’s a dried cherry and coconut mixture covered in dark chocolate. It’s so delicious! I think I’m going to have to try this smoothie now and see if it reminds me of it!
My favourite way to cook quinoa is make a big batch with almond milk, sultanas, cinnamon, nutmeg and honey, and once it’s all cooked I freeze it in batches and de frost for breakfast! I way prefer sweet quinoa!
And about the coffee stuff.. Oh my gee, as a barista this stuff annoys the crap out of me. In fact, I just made a YouTube video on my channel which makes fun of that sort of stuff!
    Happy Friday my lovely!

    • I haven’t tried that one yet! I’ll definitely have to.
Mmmm…I like the idea of sweet quinoa! Definitely my type of thing!

  8. I am definitely guilty of writing expresso instead of espresso at times. Oops! As long as it’s coffee, I don’t care how it’s spelled just give me that shit! lol I’ve been seeing the blue Essie around blogs lately and I really want to get my hands on it… Although I have about five different blues right now… There’s ALWAYS a slight difference. lol I love bebe. I just wish it wasn’t so pricey (as lululemon) but it is worth the money.

  9. I would love to see Food Matters sometime…I’ve seen Food Inc and Forks Over Knives and I really enjoyed both!

Love Zevia! I keep a stash in the fridge at all times for when I want something bubbly ;-) I’ve never seen the strawberry flavour before though…I usually go for ginger ale or ginger root beerI also love my Diet Coke/Coke Zero, but try to keep that reigned in to a couple times a month.

  10. I’m not a soda drinker – all about coffee/lattes! Your smoothie looks incredible. Food, Inc. was really life changing for me. Tough to watch, but worth it. Have a great weekend!

  11. Oh yum, I haven’t had a luna bar in forever, but I love carrot cake so if I see that flavor I’m going to pick up a few. I had a really good quinoa dish a while back that has stuck with me but I haven’t been able to recreate the recipe quite right yet- it’s quinoa stuffed peppers. The stuffing was so good- quinoa, mushrooms, onions, peppers and a couple other chopped veggies…

  12. That documentary sounds so interesting, I want to watch it. And the Smoothie recipe, sounds SO good I will definitely try it.
So exciting that your Pilates training starts so soon!!

  13. Congratulations on starting your Pilates instructor journey! Also, I really really wish I could try Zevia – man that thing looks good.

I’m all about smoothies lately! I want to try that one out!

  14. we love frozen cherries in smoothies :) one that we used to make was cherries hemp protein and cocoa, so good

  15. I’ve been on the lookout for those new Essie colors as well, but so far… no luck :( What the heck, Canada?! I have to agree that OPI is way better in terms of staying power, but the Essie colors are just too adorable to pass up. And speaking of being on the lookout… I’ve been wanting to try that strawberry Zevia as well, but it’s one of the few flavors I’ve never come across. I don’t drink Zevia all that often, but in the rare instance that a soda craving hits, I’ll usually pop open a ginger root beer or cream soda Zevia and enjoy :)

Happy Friday, love! Hope the weather improves in your neck of the woods! It’s been kinda nasty around here too, but that’s really nothing new.

    • Right, we never have the good ones! I’m surprised Nanaimo carried them but Victoria doesn’t So weird. Okay, I’ve got to try ginger root bear and cream soda now!

  16. I love carrot cake! I havent seen the carrot cake luna bars. I would love for you to make a healthier version so I could try and make it too :)

  17. Loooove the carrot cake Luna bars! I am not a fan of Xevia because I don’t like soda at all, but I do like sparkling water. That smoothie recipe sounds incredible – the combo of cherry and chocolate is one of my faves.

  18. Hi Lisa! I just found your blog and am loving it so far! I love carrot cake and had no idea about those Luna bars, but now I want to try one! I also want to see that documentary- where did you rent it from? And don’t even get me started on quinoa. I have a problem and cook with it constantly. You can find a few recipes on my site for it, the Mediterranean Quinoa Casserole is a good one! :)

    • Thank so much Sarah!
I actually watched it straight from the website foodmatters.tv I think the price was $4.95, but I’m pretty sure you can rent it from your library too!
So checking out your quinoa recipe, sounds fabulous!

  19. recently i substituted quinoa for rice and made burrito bowl like in chipotle – the best thing :) have never tried that zevia stuff nor luna bars :( I am on hunt for frozen cherries. I am so waiting for your pilates video now

  20. That smoothie looks so refreshing and is getting me in the mood for summer! I have never seen Food Matters, but I’m sure I would really find it interesting. I’m going to see if I can find it on netflix. I haven’t tried Zevia, but I might just try one this weekend….you’re right, the cute pink can is just too much. This is one of my favorite quinoa recipes on my bloghttp://www.hungryhealthygirl.com/recipes/?recipe_id=6037306 I have a couple.

  21. YAYY! So cool. Teaching Pilates is the best-I really love the method & teaching it!

And Zevia is the BOMB! The best flavor is Grapefruit IMO :)

    love the nail colors!!

    • I’m SO excited to start the training, but I’m kind of nervous too.
I’ll have to try grapefruit next :D
Hope you’re doing well lovely! <3

  22. okay, so when can i come take a pilates class from you?!! So COOL!

  23. Oh my I feel like I have so much to comment on for this post!
First, chocolate covered cherry smoothies are my FAVORITE! I buy organic frozen cherries at our Sprouts but will have to check Costco!
Second, I haven’t seen that documentary but really want to! I also haven’t watched Food.inc and am dying to but the hubby doesn’t want to. even though we eat VERY healthy so I’m not sure what he’s afraid of.
Third, although I’m not eating quinoa now (not paleo) our go to recipe is always a hit and super easy! 2 cups cooked quinoa, julienned cucumbers and carrots, edemame, toasted almonds, green onions and Annie’s Asian dressing. So good!

    • I was TOO excited that Costco carried them! Hah.
Now, I need to watch Food Inc. since I haven’t seen it but I really recommend this one!
That sounds like a great recipe, and simple too which I love. Thanks for it! :)

  24. I was *just* at Costco today, and I’m kicking myself for not picking up frozen cherries, because that smoothie looks pretty knock-your-socks off amazing. I love love love the combination of cherries and chocolate, and don’t blame you for being obsessed. :)

Food Matters has been on my must-watch list for so long, too! I wonder if it’s available on Netflix? And just between you and me, I’m a total research nerd as well…When I sit down and watch documentaries, I often take notes in my phone and email them to myself!

That carrot cake Luna bar has been calling to me from blog pages for several weeks, but I can’t find it anywhere! I’m heading to Target tomorrow, and sure hope it’s in stock. If not, I’m not sure what I’m going to do…maybe make your homemade version?

I’m so excited for you to get your pilates teacher certification!! Will you please do a pilates tutorial vlog sometime? I haven’t practiced since high school, and definitely have some catching up to do.

Happy weekend, dear friend!! Love you tooooons! <3 xoxo

    • Oh good question! I bet it would be…well maybe Haha yay I love that you’re a research nerd too ;)
Yes, I’ll definitely do a pilates tutorial thing-y!
      I’m so excited.
      Love you!

  25. So excited to hear how you enjoy your teachers training! I bet you will love it and shine! :)

  26. Are we soul mates?
-I’ve been on the hunt for a bag of frozen cherries FOREVER! Instead, I’ve been buying a mixed berry blend & eating all the cherries right away.
-I NEED THAT STRAWBERRY ZEVIA. I actually can’t stand anything stevia, but I don’t mind those Zevia sodas.
    - I HAD A DREAM ABOUT THAT CARROT CAKE LUNA LAST NIGHT!!!

    :)

I love Mama Pea’s enchilada quinoa casserole. It’s so good.

    • Frozen cherries may be my favorite fruit ever! It’s funny because I don’t normally even like cherries ha.
That’s hilarious, I think we may be secretly twins:)
And checking out that recipe asap! Thanks!

  27. I love frozen cherries! I can’t seem to find them anywhere though. I’ve had the carrot cake clif bar and it was okay, but I much prefer luna. Too bad we don’t have that flavour in Canada, all the good stuff seems to be in the states :(

    • I couldn’t find them forever, Costco sells them though!
I know right! It makes me sad how we don’t get the same flavors!
